We're old hands when it comes to Duffy's Sports Grill because our local college alumni group meets at a Duffy's in the fall to watch football games. However, we'd never been to the one in western Boynton.
My wife and I suggested meeting someone from our alma mater there, and arrived at 6:30 p.m. on a Wednesday night to find a line at the door. We had a 35-minute wait. Fortunately, the person we met there had already signed up, so our wait was cut short by 10 minutes.
Duffy's has taken the sports grill concept to its ultimate, with a TV in every place imaginable. As we were seated, a Penn State basketball game was just tipping off on the Big Ten Network, and the daughter of our new friend from the university was actually at the game that night.
We started with an order of mozzarella sticks ($6.75), and they were superb, with a great red sauce for dipping. When it came time to order, I went with the rodeo burger ($8.99), which has cheddar cheese, bacon and barbecue sauces on it, while my wife ordered the crunchy mahi mahi sandwich ($9.99) and our friend got the crab cake entrée ($15.98).
We chatted for a while, and watched a very close first half of the basketball game. Soon, our order arrived. The burger was cooked just right, medium rare, and my wife's fish sandwich was mild and crunchy. Our friend's crab cakes were large and appeared to be loaded with crab. Everyone said they were full, but I ordered a fried cheesecake ($5.99) to share. I'm not sure if my wife caught on that I was just trying to stall until the end of the basketball game. The only problem with that plan was that the dessert was so good that we finished with 3 minutes still left in the game.
My gracious wife allowed me to stick around to see the win on the other team's missed shot with less than 1 second left, and the three of us walked out happy with a win and a winning new place to eat.
